I had been out of high school a year or two and accepting art requests for all types of unrelated venues. A client asked if I could design a sign for their shoe store in Gatlinburg based on an art nouveau look and feel. When they were not satisfied with local woodcarvers to create the sign, I taught myself woodcarving and made the sign for them (it's the same on both sides). I can't remember how much money I made on this project (probably not much) but my craft skills progressed through the process.
