Graphite Portrait
Graphite Portrait Enhanced
Graphite (pencil) art is ideal for digitizing and enhancing with any of the numerous photo effects apps. The very nature of it's rich tones set it up for bringing out the best in digital effects.
Shown are before and after images. Literally hundreds of effects look great with graphite tonal art.

Insect Sketch
Insect Sketch
Artists, don't feel like you always have to stay in the lines. Sometimes taking the liberty to stray a bit offers it's on rewards.
I did this quick little four minute sketch of an insect and only gave it minimal detail. The legs are basically just a few little scratches of dark. (With something this small the naked eye doesn't see much anyway, we just get a semblance of things.)
I added a blue spray behind the little guy and then came back and masked out the area where the bug and leaf were. You notice that, especially in the leg area, I took great liberties with not attempting to keep the color within the lines. The sloppy approach allows the white to give an extra emphasis and help add to the quick look which is what this type of art is all about.
Lion Sketch
Lion Sketch
Artists, never be afraid to distort when appropriate. If you are working from a photo, there's a possibility the photo has already done some distortion of it's own and you are in no way obligated to copy it precisely. This 'copy exactly' mentality is a mistake the majority of artists fall into. The lion's eye, ear and paw have been enlarged since in the photo they appear too minuscule and diminutive. The paw is greatly enlarged and now looks much closer to the way it should.

Small Polymer Piece
I was playing with, and developing some sculpting skills in the years between attending art school and traditional college. This small piece is part of a series which I worked on at the time of America's bicentennial.
