Respect

Respect
Not respecting and disrespectful have come to mean two different things.
It's perfectly alright to not respect a person or thing. Respect is something that has to be earned. You respect them because they have earned that respect, either to you personally or through actions and deeds within the greater realm, but you are not required to show mock respect when it is dumbfounded and misplaced.

Disrespectful is a negative trait. It has little to do with the object of your scorn, but everything to do with your own actions and attitude. It has to do with one's own lack of character. It becomes an even greater offense when directed towards a person or thing which deserves respect through their own high conduct and history but you have chosen to ridicule instead. Your actions put you at fault.

A good simple rule of thumb is to give respect where respect is due, but avoid being disrespectful even when it might be deserved. By following such an attitude you continually take the high road and lose very little in the process.
