Researchers normally place higher credibility on the eyewitness' testimony over other conflicting, and often hearsay accounts. Eyewitness accounts are regarded in such high esteem that they are subject to attack by any who might profit by holding an opposite view.

Know your source. Go with the most reliable and accurate.
